This project is a response to the 2024 ISTD Brief ‘The Line’. My outcome aims to bridge the gap between performance poetry and typography.
I created a ‘visual transcription system’, using data from spectrograms made from Roger McGough's performance of the poem. This system can be used to transcribe any poem. The system itself was developed to communicate the nuances of speech through typography and image, crossing the line between the data-led technology of spectrograms, and the art of poetry, design and typesetting.
The selected poem was ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough, 2015, a poem that reiterates the importance of sound in our everyday lives.
The outcome was a double sided concertina which has the visual transcription system outcomes on one side; and information about the poet, a poem analysis, and information on how the system works.
