This project is a response to the 2024 ISTD Brief ‘The Line’ which explored the relationship between speech and typography.
The final outcome was an experimental concertina/accordion book where an elastic band held the spine of the book together. The band could be removed and shifted to the opposite spine, allowing the book to have a side A and side B, much like a vinyl. When opened in full, the book measures 5.6 meters in length.
I created a ‘visual transcription system’, which used data captured from spectrograms of Roger McGough's performance of the poem. This system can be used to transcribe any poem. The system aims to explore and communicate the nuances of speech through typography and image, bridging the gap between the data-led technology of spectrograms, and the art of poetry, design and typesetting.
The selected poem was ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough, 2015, a poem that reiterates the importance of sound in our everyday lives.
